The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has staked 69,500 ETH, just 500 coins short of its 70,000 ETH target announced in late February. This milestone marks significant progress in the foundation’s revamped treasury strategy, which aims to generate yield from staked assets to fund protocol research, development, and ecosystem grants. The EF staked over 45,000 ETH on Friday alone, with the total value of the staked amount exceeding $92.2 million, according to Arkham Intelligence. The foundation began staking ETH in February as part of its new policy, which was outlined in June 2025. The EF has now locked over $143 million in ETH in the Ethereum Beacon Deposit Contract. The move to a yield-bearing treasury strategy followed community pressure for the EF to generate income from its treasury rather than relying on token sales to cover operational costs. The foundation staked 2,016 ETH in February, valued at about $4.1 million, followed by 22,517 ETH in March, valued at approximately $46.1 million. The staking activities have raised concerns about the EF’s influence on network decisions, particularly in the event of a contentious hard fork. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted this risk in January 2025, noting that staking positions could force the foundation to take a stance on competing blockchain chains. The EF is actively exploring ways to mitigate centralization risks associated with its staking activities.
