Zambia and Angola Advance $5 Billion Copper Rail Corridor

Zambia is moving forward with a strategic railway project designed to streamline the export of copper to global markets. According to a recent environmental study published by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency, the rail link connecting Zambian mines to the Lobito port in neighboring Angola could cost up to $5 billion. The project represents a critical effort to reduce logistical bottlenecks for one of the world's primary copper producers. By establishing a direct route to the Atlantic coast via Angola, the corridor aims to enhance the efficiency of mineral exports and reduce reliance on existing, often congested, transport routes. The proposed line spans 830 kilometers (516 miles). Construction is slated to begin this year, with a target completion date of 2030. The Africa Finance Corp. is serving as the lead developer and sponsor for the initiative. While the project is long-term, it signals a significant commitment to increasing the throughput of copper, a metal essential for the global energy transition. The successful implementation of the Lobito corridor could lower transport costs and improve the overall competitiveness of Zambian copper on the world stage.
