Meta has unveiled Muse Spark, a high-efficiency AI model developed by the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs. The launch marks a strategic shift toward proprietary technology and a massive increase in infrastructure spending.

  • Muse Spark is a proprietary, high-efficiency model targeting science and math
  • 2026 AI capex guidance set at $115 billion to $135 billion
  • Strategic shift from open-source to proprietary AI development
  • New revenue stream being tested via a private API preview
  • Integration planned for all major Meta social platforms and wearable hardware

Meta has introduced Muse Spark, its first major AI model under the leadership of Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the model represents a significant pivot in the company's approach to the generative AI race following the underwhelming reception of previous open-source releases. Designed for speed and efficiency, Muse Spark focuses on complex reasoning within the fields of science, mathematics, and healthcare. Rather than attempting to build the largest possible model, Meta is prioritizing a 'small and fast' architecture that provides competitive performance while requiring significantly less compute than previous midsize Llama variants. To support this ambition, Meta is aggressively scaling its infrastructure. The company revealed that AI-related capital expenditures for 2026 are projected to reach between $115 billion and $135 billion, nearly doubling the spending levels of the previous year. This investment is intended to close the gap with hyperscale competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. In a departure from its Llama-based open-source philosophy, Muse Spark is a proprietary model. Meta is also exploring new monetization avenues by offering a private API preview to select partners, with plans to expand paid access to a wider developer audience in the future. The model will be integrated across Meta's entire ecosystem, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. This rollout comes as the global generative AI market is forecasted to grow from $22 billion in 2025 to approximately $325 billion by 2033. Meta shares surged nearly 9% following the announcement, though the rally occurred alongside a broader market jump triggered by geopolitical developments regarding Iran.
