Yuga Labs Resolves Trademark Dispute Over Bored Ape Copycat NFTs

Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has settled its long-standing lawsuit against artist Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen. The legal conflict centered on allegations that the pair created a copycat NFT collection that infringed upon Yuga's intellectual property. The dispute began in 2022 when Yuga Labs alleged that the RR/BAYC project used lookalike tokens to confuse buyers and generate millions in revenue. Ripps and Cahen defended their actions as a form of artistic satire aimed at the original Bored Ape collection. The case saw fluctuating outcomes in the court system. A district judge initially ruled in favor of Yuga Labs, awarding nearly $9 million in damages and fees. However, an appeals court later overturned that decision, ruling that a jury should determine if consumers were actually misled by the copycat project. The final settlement avoids a full trial.
