Cruise Stocks Rally on Pfizer's Omicron Booster and Antiviral Progress

Shares of the world's leading cruise operators saw a sharp increase on Wednesday as positive clinical data from Pfizer sparked hope for a more manageable COVID-19 landscape. The rally is driven by the belief that booster shots and new antiviral treatments will mitigate the impact of the Omicron variant, encouraging consumers to resume booking high-capacity travel experiences. Pfizer reported that a third vaccine dose increases neutralizing antibodies by 25-fold, potentially offering protection against Omicron similar to the original vaccine's efficacy against the initial strain. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical giant expects a variant-specific vaccine to be available by March if necessary. The company is also awaiting clinical results for Paxlovid, an oral antiviral treatment projected to reduce hospitalizations and deaths by nearly 90%. Market reaction was immediate, with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) leading the gains with an 8% jump. Royal Caribbean (RCL) and Carnival (CCL) both rose by 5%.
