A new tool aims to prevent users from being locked out of their funds during a potential quantum-driven emergency network upgrade. The prototype allows owners to prove wallet ownership using seeds without compromising security.

  • Addresses the 'emergency brake' flaw that could lock users out of funds
  • Enables ownership proof via seeds without exposing private keys
  • Prototype demonstrates 55-second proof generation and sub-2-second verification
  • No formal proposal for Bitcoin blockchain integration currently exists
  • Designed specifically to protect Taproot-based wallets

Olaoluwa Osuntokun, Chief Technology Officer at Lightning Labs, has developed a working prototype designed to rescue Bitcoin wallets in the event of a quantum computing attack. The tool addresses a critical flaw in proposed 'emergency brake' upgrades intended to protect the network from quantum adversaries. While such emergency upgrades would protect the network by disabling vulnerable signature systems, they would simultaneously freeze funds in millions of Taproot wallets. Because these wallets rely solely on the signature system to authorize spending, a network-wide shutdown would leave rightful owners with no way to prove ownership, effectively stranding their coins. Osuntokun's solution replaces the traditional digital signature—which a quantum computer could forge—with a mathematical proof. This system allows a user to prove they originally created the wallet using their secret seed. Crucially, the process does not require revealing the seed itself, ensuring that other wallets derived from the same seed remain secure. Initial performance tests conducted on a high-end consumer MacBook showed that generating a proof took approximately 55 seconds, while verification was completed in under two seconds. The resulting proof file was roughly 1.7 MB in size. Despite the prototype's functionality, it remains an unoptimized side project. There is currently no formal proposal for blockchain integration or a deployment timeline, as the developer community remains divided on the immediate urgency of the quantum threat.
