Czech Republic Targets 2060s Extension for Dukovany Nuclear Plant

The Czech Republic is moving to prolong the operational life of the Dukovany nuclear power plant, potentially extending its service into the mid-2060s. This strategic shift follows a comprehensive safety analysis which indicated that the plant's infrastructure is capable of operating far beyond its original design parameters. Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek stated that the facility's four reactors could potentially run for a total of 80 years. This would push the decommissioning date to approximately 2065 or 2067, provided that necessary investments are maintained to ensure safety and efficiency. Prior to this updated analysis, the power utility CEZ AS had estimated a total operational lifespan of 60 years for the site. The discovery that the plant can safely operate for an additional two decades provides a significant boost to the nation's long-term energy security strategy.
