Kia Targets US Midsize Pickup Market with 2030 Launch Strategy

Kia has unveiled plans to expand its North American footprint by introducing a new body-on-frame pickup truck by 2030. The announcement, made during the company's 2026 CEO investor day, signals a strategic push into one of the most profitable segments of the US automotive market. The automaker intends to target the midsize pickup category, positioning its new offering against established leaders such as the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and General Motors' Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. To align with evolving consumer preferences, Kia will offer hybrid variants, with at least one version slated for domestic production in the United States. Kia CEO Ho Sung Song highlighted that the US pickup market accounts for approximately 20% of total demand. The company has set an ambitious target to sell 90,000 pickups annually in North America and capture a 7% share of the midsize segment by 2034. This expansion is part of a larger growth trajectory. Kia aims to increase its annual US sales to 1.02 million vehicles by 2030, up from over 850,000 units last year. Globally, the company is targeting sales of 4.13 million units and a 4.5% market share by 2030, leveraging a diversified portfolio of electric vehicles, hybrids, and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).
