Oklo Eyes Criticality Milestone as AI Power Demand Fuels Nuclear Renaissance

Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) is approaching a pivotal technical milestone that could validate its small modular reactor (SMR) technology and accelerate its path to commercialization. The company is targeting July 4, 2026, to achieve 'criticality'—the point at which a nuclear reactor maintains a self-sustaining reaction. This effort is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, an initiative designed to fast-track the licensing of advanced nuclear designs. Oklo, which acquired Atomic Alchemy, is one of the few participants selected for this program, which aims to unleash a broader 'nuclear renaissance' in the United States. The push for advanced nuclear power is largely driven by the exponential growth of artificial intelligence. According to Bank of America, the AI sector requires vast amounts of reliable, clean energy to power data centers, creating a potential $10 trillion opportunity. Current grid capacities are deemed insufficient to meet these rising needs. Achieving criticality would provide the real-world validation Oklo currently lacks. Such a success would likely streamline approvals from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), removing a primary bottleneck for scaling. If successful, Oklo remains on track to bring its first project online by the end of 2027.
