Metals.io Launches Blockchain Platform for Tokenized Critical Minerals and Precious Metals

Metals.io has introduced a blockchain-powered web application designed to provide retail investors with direct, round-the-clock access to a diversified portfolio of precious and critical metals. The platform seeks to eliminate traditional barriers to entry, such as high minimum purchase requirements and restricted trading hours associated with conventional commodity investments. The platform arrives amid increasing global demand for rare earth elements and strategic minerals, which are essential for high-tech manufacturing, defense systems, and renewable energy infrastructure. While investors typically rely on ETFs or managed funds for exposure, these vehicles often involve regional restrictions and management fees. By utilizing tokenization, Metals.io converts physical assets into digital tokens that act as warehouse receipts. This allows for fractional ownership and divisibility of assets. The infrastructure is supported by the Tezos blockchain and regulated partners, including the UK's Archax digital securities exchange and Noemon Finance. Physical backing is provided through industry partnerships. Uranium assets are stored in depositories operated by Cameco, one of the world's largest uranium providers, while strategic metals are held by MetlockGmbH in the European Union. LBMA-certified physical gold is tokenized via VNX Commodities. This initiative reflects a growing trend in the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA), attempting to bring the liquidity and accessibility of digital assets to the traditional commodities market.
