CEO Greg Abel has reinitiated Berkshire Hathaway's share repurchase program as the company's valuation returns to attractive levels. The conglomerate continues to deploy its $373 billion cash reserve through internal buybacks and strategic acquisitions.

  • Reinitiation of share repurchase program
  • Price-to-book ratio currently sits at 1.4
  • Cash and Treasury bill reserves total $373 billion
  • Completed $9.7 billion acquisition of OxyChem
  • Strategic $1.8 billion investment in Tokio Marine
  • Annual operating earnings grew to $44.5 billion

Greg Abel, who assumed the role of CEO at Berkshire Hathaway at the start of 2026, has begun utilizing the firm's massive liquidity to repurchase company shares. Inheriting a portfolio of approximately $650 billion in assets, Abel is shifting the firm's focus toward active management of its operating businesses and opportunistic equity buybacks. In March, the company spent $226 million on its own stock. This move follows a period where former CEO Warren Buffett halted repurchases as the price-to-book ratio climbed above 1.5, peaking at 1.75. Currently, the ratio has retreated to approximately 1.4, which the board considers a reasonable price relative to the company's intrinsic value. Beyond internal buybacks, Abel has overseen several significant capital deployments. This includes the closing of a $9.7 billion acquisition of OxyChem from Occidental Petroleum and a $1.8 billion strategic investment to acquire a 2.5% stake in the Japanese multinational insurer Tokio Marine. Berkshire's underlying fundamentals remain robust. The conglomerate's diversified subsidiaries generated $44.5 billion in combined earnings last year. While this represents a slight dip from 2024, it marks a significant increase from $37.4 billion in 2023 and $30.9 billion in 2022, providing a steady stream of capital to support Abel's investment strategy.
