OpenAI IPO Speculation Grows as Indirect Investment Paths Emerge

OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) potentially before the end of 2026. The company, which achieved 100 million active users within two months of its 2022 launch, has become one of the world's most valuable private entities. Currently valued at $852 billion, OpenAI remains a private company, limiting direct ownership to institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals. However, the prospect of a public listing is drawing significant attention from retail traders looking to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom. Investors are currently utilizing Ark Investment Management as a proxy for OpenAI exposure. In March, Ark invested $240 million into the company, distributing the position across three exchange-traded funds: the Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK), the Ark Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW), and the Ark Blockchain and Fintech ETF (ARKF). OpenAI represents slightly less than 3% of each fund's portfolio. The company reports approximately $24 billion in annualized revenue, driven by subscription models and API access for developers. Despite this growth, OpenAI continues to operate at a loss. From a valuation perspective, OpenAI carries a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 35.5. This represents a significant premium compared to industry leader Nvidia, which currently trades at a P/S ratio of 19.8, raising questions about the valuation's sustainability should the company enter the public markets in the near term.
