AI Startup Citizen Health Aims to Accelerate Rare Disease Treatment via Patient Data Networks

Citizen Health, a healthcare startup co-founded by entrepreneurs Nasha Fitter and Farid Vij, is deploying artificial intelligence to bridge the critical information gap for families dealing with rare genetic disorders. The company was born from Fitter's personal experience with her daughter's diagnosis of FOXG1 syndrome, which highlighted the lack of systematic medical guidance and the common reliance on unverified social media groups for rare disease management. The platform functions as an 'AI advocate,' utilizing medical records, genetic data, and patient-reported experiences to create a searchable dataset. This allows patients and clinicians to find answers that are often missing from general large language models (LLMs) due to a lack of training data on rare conditions. Currently, the platform hosts over 8,000 patients across more than 350 different diseases. This aggregated data is being utilized by more than 16 pharmaceutical companies to advance the development of new therapies and reduce the timelines required to bring treatments to market. The service is free for patients, with 98.3% of users opting to share their data with researchers. Citizen Health monetizes this access for commercial researchers, sharing a portion of the proceeds with the contributing patients to democratize the benefits of medical research.
