The new facility is designed to accommodate over 500 employees, significantly increasing the company's current UK headcount of approximately 200. The expansion places OpenAI in the King's Cross area, a concentrated hub for artificial intelligence that already hosts major players such as Google DeepMind and Meta. This move aligns with a February announcement designating London as the company's primary research hub outside the United States. However, the office opening arrives shortly after OpenAI halted its 'Stargate' project in the UK. The company cited prohibitive industrial energy costs and a challenging regulatory environment as the primary drivers for the pause. While discussions with partner Nscale continue, the decision highlights the systemic hurdles facing the UK's AI infrastructure buildout, specifically regarding national grid access and energy pricing. Despite these infrastructure setbacks, the UK AI sector continues to attract significant venture capital. Funding has reached $6.7 billion in 2026, nearing the $8.2 billion total for the previous year. Notable recent raises include $2 billion for Nscale, $1.2 billion for Wayve, and $500 million for ElevenLabs. The UK government continues to aggressively court AI firms to bridge the gap with the US and China.
