Treasury Safety vs. Corporate Yield: Comparing IEI and IGIB ETFs

The choice between government-backed stability and corporate yield is central to fixed-income strategy, as exemplified by the differing profiles of the iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) and the iShares 5-10 Year Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (IGIB). While both funds are managed by iShares, they target different risk appetites. IEI focuses on a compact portfolio of U.S. Treasuries, whereas IGIB seeks higher returns through a diversified basket of investment-grade corporate debt. IGIB is characterized by a significantly lower expense ratio—nearly four times lower than that of IEI—and a higher dividend yield. Its portfolio is highly diversified, containing nearly 3,000 corporate bonds, with JPMorgan Chase (JPM) as a top issuer representing 2.3% of the fund. Conversely, IEI maintains a concentrated hold of 83 U.S. Treasury bonds maturing between 2029 and 2033. This structure provides maximum credit safety and a tendency to move independently of equity markets, though it comes with higher management costs. Performance data shows that IGIB produced a total return of 8.37% over the last five years. However, its corporate exposure makes it more susceptible to stock market volatility compared to the Treasury-only approach of IEI, which offers a milder drawdown over the same period.
