Amazon Reportedly Eyes Globalstar Acquisition to Accelerate Satellite Ambitions

Amazon is reportedly exploring the acquisition of Globalstar, a strategic move intended to rapidly expand its satellite infrastructure and global connectivity capabilities. The e-commerce and cloud giant is currently racing to build out its own satellite constellation to compete directly with SpaceX's Starlink. Currently, the gap in infrastructure is substantial. While Starlink operates over 10,000 active satellites, Amazon's current deployment stands at approximately 200, with a long-term target of 3,200. Acquiring an established player would allow Amazon to scale its operations far more quickly than organic growth allows. The primary driver for the potential deal is Globalstar's extensive portfolio of spectrum licenses. These licenses, which cover more than 120 countries, are highly regulated and typically require years of diplomatic and legal navigation to secure. By acquiring Globalstar, Amazon could bypass these regulatory hurdles and immediately gain the ability to transmit cellular data via satellite globally. Market reaction was immediate, with Globalstar shares rising approximately 8% following the rumors. If finalized, the deal would signal a major escalation in the race for satellite-based broadband, potentially shifting the competitive landscape of the space economy.
