Musician Loses $420,000 in Bitcoin to Fraudulent App Store Software

Garrett Dutton, known professionally as G. Love, has reported the loss of approximately $420,000 in Bitcoin after falling victim to a sophisticated phishing scam. The loss occurred after the musician installed a fraudulent version of the Ledger Live self-custody application via the Apple App Store and subsequently entered his seed phrase. The incident highlights a recurring security failure where malicious software manages to bypass the rigorous review processes of major tech platforms. By entering his seed phrase into the fake application, Dutton lost a Bitcoin stash he had accumulated over a decade to secure his retirement. Blockchain analyst ZachXBT tracked the 5.9 BTC across nine transactions, noting that the funds were moved to deposit addresses associated with the KuCoin exchange. This event follows a broader trend of rising crypto-related losses; the FBI reported that Americans lost over $11 billion to such incidents in 2025, an increase from $9 billion recorded the previous year. While the loss is significant for the individual, it reflects a systemic issue with app store impersonation scams. Similar tactics were observed in 2023 when a fake Ledger app on the Microsoft store resulted in nearly $600,000 in thefts, prompting an admission from Microsoft regarding its review process failures.
