Rigetti Computing’s Fidelity Milestone Overshadowed by Scaling Hurdles and Competition

Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) recently announced that its quantum platform achieved a 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.9%, representing an error rate of approximately one in every 1,000 operations. While the company views this as a technical success, the milestone was achieved within a limited research and development environment rather than a production-scale system. The achievement faces immediate comparison with industry rivals. IonQ reportedly surpassed this threshold in October 2025, reaching 99.99% fidelity. In the precision-dependent field of quantum computing, this marginal difference is considered significant, placing Rigetti behind its primary peer in terms of raw accuracy. More concerning for investors is the apparent difficulty in scaling this technology. While the prototype reached 99.9%, Rigetti's larger 108-qubit system only achieved 99% fidelity. This discrepancy suggests that as the system grows in complexity, the error rate increases, posing a hurdle for the company's long-term viability. Rigetti also faces intense competition from hyperscalers like Microsoft and Alphabet. These tech giants possess vastly superior financial and computational resources, making the path to commercialization more difficult for smaller players. Consequently, the current technical record may not be sufficient to differentiate Rigetti in a crowded and capital-intensive market.
