The Nikkei 225 extended its losses on Friday as investors remained wary of global banking instability. This downturn coincided with a sharper-than-expected retreat in Japan's annual inflation rate.

  • Nikkei 225 closed at 27,304.38, down 0.42%
  • February headline inflation fell to 3.3% from January's 4.3%
  • Core CPI matched forecasts at 3.1%
  • Banking and automotive sectors led market losses
  • Semiconductor stocks showed relative strength

The Japanese equity market faced continued pressure on Friday, with the Nikkei 225 Index falling 115.23 points, or 0.42%, to close at 27,304.38. Despite positive momentum from U.S. markets overnight, Japanese traders maintained a cautious stance, driven largely by ongoing volatility in the global banking sector. The market's fragility was evident across several heavyweights. Automakers Toyota and Honda both saw declines of nearly 1%, while banking giants Mizuho Financial and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial also dropped over 1%. In contrast, the semiconductor space provided a rare bright spot, with Tokyo Electron and Screen Holdings posting gains of approximately 2% and 3%, respectively. On the macroeconomic front, Japan reported a significant cooling of price pressures. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications revealed that overall consumer prices rose 3.3% year-on-year in February, missing the 3.6% forecast and marking a steep drop from January's 4.3%. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food costs, rose 3.1%, aligning with market expectations but down from the previous month's 4.2%. The combination of cooling inflation and banking sector nerves has kept the U.S. dollar trading in the lower 130 yen range. While Wall Street's Nasdaq and S&P 500 ended their previous session in the green, the sentiment in Tokyo remained bearish as investors weighed domestic economic data against systemic risks in the financial industry.
