MDA Space has introduced MIDNIGHT, a maneuverable spacecraft designed to protect and maintain critical low Earth orbit assets for defense organizations. The platform integrates advanced robotics and rendezvous capabilities to counter threats and manage space debris.

  • Rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) for threat detection
  • Support for satellite refueling and asset relocation
  • Capability to de-orbit non-operational assets to reduce debris
  • Built on existing SKYMAKER and AURORA technology portfolios
  • Targeted at defense organizations in contested space environments

MDA Space Ltd. has unveiled MIDNIGHT, a specialized space control platform engineered to safeguard defense assets in low Earth orbit (LEO). The system utilizes high-reliability rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) to detect, identify, and deter potential threats to critical orbital infrastructure. The platform is designed for a variety of strategic defense applications, including on-orbit surveillance, the relocation of assets, and satellite refueling. By combining active and passive payload capabilities with advanced robotics, MIDNIGHT aims to provide defense organizations with actionable intelligence in increasingly contested space environments. CEO Mike Greenley stated that the platform leverages decades of expertise in satellite operations and robotics, utilizing high-volume commercial production capacity. MIDNIGHT is built to be rapidly configurable and deployable, allowing it to adapt to evolving threats. Its initial missions will focus on LEO collaboration, including the inspection of satellite status and the mitigation of electronic countermeasures. The platform integrates technology from MDA’s existing SKYMAKER robotics and AURORA satellite bus systems. Additionally, the spacecraft can assist in space sustainability by de-orbiting non-operational assets to help manage orbital debris. Following the announcement, MDA Space shares traded lower by 2.12% in overnight sessions, reaching $29.94.
