OpenAI Establishes Permanent London Base to Scale Research Operations

OpenAI has officially expanded its physical footprint in the United Kingdom, signing a lease for its first permanent London office. The new facility, spanning 88,500 square feet, is designed to support a workforce of more than 500 team members, marking a significant increase in the company's local operational capacity. This expansion comes as a strategic pivot following the company's decision to halt the 'Stargate' AI infrastructure project in the UK. Despite the cancellation of that specific initiative, OpenAI remains committed to the region, having previously announced plans to make London its primary research hub outside of the United States. The company currently employs approximately 200 people in the UK capital. Phoebe Thacker, the site lead for London, emphasized that the move is driven by the city's deep pool of AI talent and its established track record in the field, noting that the new space is essential for continued growth. While the move is an operational shift, it underscores the ongoing global competition for specialized AI expertise. By establishing a permanent headquarters in London, OpenAI aims to solidify its research capabilities and scale its presence within the European market.
