The landscape for spot Bitcoin ETFs has matured, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) emerging as two of the most prominent vehicles for institutional and retail exposure. Both funds are designed to track the price of Bitcoin without requiring investors to manage private keys or digital wallets. For most investors, the choice between the two is a matter of preference regarding scale and security infrastructure rather than cost. Both funds operate with a market-average expense ratio of 0.25%, ensuring that the drag on total returns is identical across both products. IBIT has established itself as the dominant player in the space, boasting nearly $60 billion in assets under management. To secure its holdings, BlackRock utilizes Coinbase Global’s cryptocurrency custody services. In contrast, FBTC offers a vertically integrated approach, with Fidelity managing its own Bitcoin storage through Fidelity Digital Assets. Because both funds are structured as pure-play trusts with nearly 100% allocation to Bitcoin, their performance and volatility profiles remain tightly correlated.
