Long term

SkyMapper has launched a dedicated Avalanche-based network to cryptographically secure and verify global telescope observations. The initiative introduces 'Proof of Space Observation' to ensure the integrity of astronomical data.

  • SkyMapper L1 creates verifiable digital records of telescope observations
  • Proof of Space Observation (POSO) prevents data alteration and misattribution
  • SETI Institute provides live production-scale data integration
  • Hybrid access model supports both open science and private defense data
  • Decentralized storage combined with Avalanche blockchain fingerprints

Avalanche is diversifying its ecosystem beyond decentralized finance (DeFi) by partnering with SkyMapper to create a secure infrastructure for astronomical data. The new SkyMapper L1 network allows telescopes worldwide to record observations as verifiable digital records, effectively turning each data point into a secure asset. The system addresses the growing challenge of verifying massive datasets generated by satellites, drones, and space missions. By utilizing blockchain technology, SkyMapper ensures that space data is tamper-resistant and independently verifiable, providing a critical layer of trust for scientific researchers and governmental agencies. Central to the project is the 'Proof of Space Observation' (POSO) protocol. When a telescope captures an event, such as a deep-space signal or satellite pass, the data is immediately cryptographically signed and time-stamped. While the bulk of the data resides in a decentralized storage network, a unique digital fingerprint is anchored on the Avalanche blockchain for permanent verification. Institutional adoption is already underway, with the SETI Institute contributing live observational data to the network. This marks one of the first production-scale integrations of institutional science into a blockchain-based verification system. The network also employs smart contracts to manage access, allowing for a hybrid model where open scientific research can coexist with private, sensitive defense data. This move signals a strategic shift toward real-world utility for Layer 1 blockchains. By moving into the space sector, Avalanche aims to demonstrate the practical application of its technology in securing high-integrity data outside of speculative financial markets.
