American Express (AXP) has announced a strategic expansion of its card member purchase protections to include transactions executed by AI agents. This initiative is designed to provide a safety net for consumers who authorize autonomous AI tools to handle purchasing decisions, mitigating the risk of agentic errors. In conjunction with these protections, the company introduced its agentic commerce developer kit on Tuesday. This toolkit provides the necessary infrastructure for developers to build AI-driven commerce applications that can interact securely with the American Express payment ecosystem. Under the new commitment, card members who delegate purchasing authority to an AI agent will remain covered by the company's protection framework if the agent makes an erroneous purchase. This move addresses one of the primary barriers to the adoption of autonomous spending: the fear of uncontrolled or incorrect financial transactions.
