The XRP Ledger is adopting zero-knowledge technology to allow financial institutions to conduct confidential transactions on a public blockchain. The integration aims to bridge the gap between institutional secrecy and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Integration of Boundless ZK-tech into XRPL base layer
  • Balances institutional confidentiality with regulatory auditability
  • Supports B2B payments and tokenized asset issuance
  • Avoids the overhead of launching separate layer-2 networks
  • Tokenized asset market grew to $29.25 billion in April 2026

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has partnered with Boundless to integrate zero-knowledge (ZK) infrastructure into its base layer, targeting the specific privacy needs of banks and asset managers. The move is designed to allow institutions to execute confidential yet compliant transactions directly on the network. This integration addresses the so-called 'transparency tax' associated with public blockchains, where the visibility of transaction sizes, frequency, and counterparties often deters institutional entry. By utilizing ZK technology, XRPL enables institutions to shield sensitive data from public view while providing regulators with selective disclosure and role-based access controls for auditing purposes. Boundless CEO Shiv Shankar noted that the solution supports high-sensitivity use cases, including cross-border business-to-business payments, treasury and capital management, over-the-counter positions, and tokenized asset issuance. Unlike some competing frameworks that require institutions to launch their own layer-2 networks, Boundless deploys via smart contracts, which allows firms to maintain access to existing liquidity pools. The push for enhanced privacy comes as the tokenized asset market continues to expand, reaching $29.25 billion in April 2026, representing a 7.9% monthly increase according to data from RWA.xyz. This growth underscores the mounting pressure on public networks to accommodate both the secrecy required by traditional finance and the oversight demanded by global supervisors. This development positions XRPL in a competitive landscape alongside other privacy-focused initiatives, such as Zama's homomorphic encryption for the T-REX platform and zkSync's Prividium environment, as the race for institutional-grade blockchain infrastructure intensifies.
