Einhorn’s Greenlight Prioritizes Capital Preservation Amid Geopolitical Volatility

David Einhorn, founder of Greenlight Capital, has signaled a cautious approach to current market conditions, emphasizing capital preservation in his latest investor letter. Despite a violent rebound in U.S. equities following the onset of the Iran conflict, Einhorn warns that investors may be overlooking significant downside risks. The S&P 500 has recently erased losses incurred during the geopolitical turmoil, fueled by optimism regarding potential diplomatic resolutions. However, Einhorn notes that with very little downside priced into the market, Greenlight is prepared to risk missing out on further gains to ensure it is positioned to play offense should a downside scenario materialize. Greenlight reported a 6.5% return for the first quarter, notably outperforming the S&P 500, which declined by 4.4% in the same period. This outperformance was driven by strategic gains in gold, Acadia Healthcare, DHT Holdings, and Core Natural Resources. The firm continues to maintain relatively low gross and net exposure due to what it views as stretched valuations. Recent tactical moves include adding a long position in October oil futures, though the bet has seen only modest gains as the market largely expects any supply disruptions to be temporary. In addition to its core holdings, Greenlight has initiated a medium-sized position in Versant Media Group and smaller stakes in Crocs and SLM Corp.
