Rep. Eric Swalwell Resigns Amid Escalating Misconduct Allegations

Representative Eric Swalwell of California is stepping down from his seat in the House of Representatives following a series of severe sexual misconduct allegations. The announcement follows the recent suspension of his campaign for the governorship of California. The resignation comes as a new accuser, Lonna Drewes, publicly alleged that Swalwell drugged and raped her in a hotel room six years ago. Drewes, represented by attorney Lisa Bloom, stated during a press conference in Los Angeles that a formal police report will be filed regarding the incident. Drewes claimed the assault occurred in West Hollywood while Swalwell was married. She alleged she was incapacitated and choked during the encounter, losing consciousness. This new accusation adds to the legal pressure on the 45-year-old lawmaker, who is already the subject of a criminal investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in New York City concerning a separate alleged assault. In a public statement, Swalwell denied any criminal wrongdoing and characterized the allegations as false. However, he expressed regret for "mistakes in judgment" made in his past and stated that he must take responsibility for those actions as he exits public office.
