Leading Chinese robotaxi operators, including Didi and Baidu, are scaling operations in the United Arab Emirates. The strategic push continues despite ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

  • Didi to launch first international robotaxi tests in UAE
  • Baidu Apollo Go targeting 1,000+ vehicles in Dubai
  • WeRide integrates driverless hailing with Uber
  • Pony.ai maintains commercial license pursuit despite Iran war
  • UAE serves as a strategic launchpad for Chinese AV exports

Chinese autonomous vehicle (AV) companies are aggressively expanding their footprint in the Middle East, with several firms launching or planning robotaxi services in the United Arab Emirates. This strategic pivot coincides with strengthening diplomatic ties between Beijing and Abu Dhabi, highlighted by recent high-level meetings between President Xi Jinping and UAE leadership. Didi has announced plans to initiate its first overseas robotaxi tests in the UAE later this year. Simultaneously, Baidu’s robotaxi unit, Apollo Go, has already deployed an initial fleet of 50 driverless vehicles in Dubai, with ambitions to scale the fleet to over 1,000 units over the next few years. Other industry players are also establishing a presence. WeRide has operationalized fare-charging driverless services in Dubai's Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim districts, integrating its booking process with the Uber platform. Pony.ai is similarly pursuing commercial licensing, with leadership stating that regional conflicts have not hindered their regulatory progress or application status. This wave of expansion positions Chinese AV firms in direct global competition with Alphabet-backed Waymo, which is currently scaling its fleets across the U.S. and testing in London and Japan. The UAE is emerging as a critical early-adoption market for Chinese autonomous technology before further expansion into Europe.
