Short term

The UK benchmark index edged higher on Wednesday as investors weighed positive corporate updates against potential diplomatic breakthroughs between the U.S. and Iran. Strong performance from the gambling and mining sectors helped push the index to a new short-term peak.

  • FTSE 100 rose 0.11% to 10,620.39
  • Rank Group shares jumped 12.5% following guidance upgrade
  • Antofagasta shares rose 2.5% on copper production outlook
  • US-Iran diplomatic talks expected to resume in Pakistan
  • Mixed performance across blue-chip stocks with losses in luxury and aviation

The FTSE 100 climbed to a six-week high during Wednesday's session, closing marginally higher as market participants balanced corporate earnings reports with anticipation of diplomatic developments in the Middle East. The index rose 11.33 points, or 0.11%, to reach 10,620.39 by midday. While the overall index movement was modest, significant volatility was seen in individual equities, particularly within the gaming and commodities sectors. Rank Group led the gainers with a 12.5% surge after the gambling operator increased its full-year underlying operating profit guidance, supported by a 5% year-on-year increase in net gaming revenue for fiscal Q3 2025-26. Antofagasta also saw gains of 2.5% as the miner projected a steady increase in copper production for the remainder of the year, despite a dip in the first quarter. Other notable gains included Entain, which rose 2.65%, and Convatec Group, which climbed 2.2%. AstraZeneca and 3i Group also saw increases between 1% and 1.5%. Conversely, a broad range of stocks including Burberry, Rolls-Royce, and Prudential faced declines ranging from 1% to 2.5%. Market sentiment was further influenced by reports that U.S. and Iranian delegations may return to Pakistan this week for negotiations. President Donald Trump indicated that the conflict is nearing its end, suggesting talks could resume within two days.
