British autonomous driving firm Wayve has expanded its strategic partnerships with the semiconductor industry, announcing a $60 million investment from Qualcomm, AMD, and Arm. This follow-on funding complements a $1.2 billion round closed in February, which included participation from Nvidia. Unlike many of its competitors, Wayve utilizes an AI-driven approach that does not rely on high-definition maps or extensive site-specific training. By securing backing from the world's primary silicon providers, Wayve aims to ensure its software is compatible across diverse hardware ecosystems, allowing automakers to choose their preferred chip platform without sacrificing autonomous capabilities. The company is currently conducting tests in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. Wayve has already established a commercial agreement with Nissan to integrate its AI into driver-assistance systems for commercial vehicles. Furthermore, a collaboration between Wayve, Nissan, and Uber is underway to develop robotaxi services. The move places Wayve in direct competition with Alphabet's Waymo, which is currently expanding its operations into London.
