A Danmarks Nationalbank report reveals that crypto ownership in Denmark remains significantly lower than in neighboring European nations. Factors including restrictive banking practices and tax hurdles have limited retail participation.

  • Ownership rate stagnant at 4% since 2023
  • Most holders own less than 10,000 DKK (~$1,570)
  • National holdings estimated between $317M and $847M
  • Danske Bank now allows BTC and ETH ETPs via MiCA framework
  • Adoption concentrated in younger, high-income demographics

A new staff paper from Danmarks Nationalbank indicates that only 4% of Danish citizens hold cryptocurrency, a figure that has remained stagnant since 2023. This rate trails significantly behind other European markets, such as the United Kingdom, Norway, and Finland, where adoption rates exceed 10%. The report, based on a survey of over 3,000 citizens, attributes the low penetration to a cautious approach by domestic banks and asymmetric tax treatments. Historically, Danish financial institutions have discouraged digital asset investments, citing high risk and limiting access to purchase platforms. Most Danish holders maintain modest positions, with the majority owning less than 10,000 Danish kroner (approximately $1,570). Total national holdings are estimated to range between $317 million and $847 million. Furthermore, indirect exposure via crypto-linked stocks and exchange-traded products (ETPs) is limited, representing only 0.4% of total equity holdings at roughly $211 million. Adoption is primarily concentrated among younger, higher-income demographics, with a sharp decline among those over 60. While most users view crypto as an investment rather than a payment method, there is a shift toward institutional access. Danske Bank, the nation's largest lender, has recently begun offering Bitcoin and Ether ETPs, citing the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation as a catalyst for this shift.
