Long term

Broadcom will co-design specialized AI chips for Meta Platforms to power generative AI infrastructure. The deal aims to reduce Meta's dependence on third-party chipmakers while optimizing performance and cost.

  • Broadcom to co-design custom AI chips using its XPU platform
  • Initial 1GW capacity as part of a multi-year rollout
  • Integration of Broadcom's optical connectivity and networking solutions
  • Strategic move by Meta to diversify supply chain away from Nvidia and AMD
  • Focus on reducing total cost of ownership for AI workloads

Broadcom (AVGO) has entered a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms (META) to co-develop custom AI accelerator chips, leveraging Broadcom's XPU platform to support Meta's massive AI training and inference requirements. The collaboration is designed to provide the infrastructure necessary to deliver advanced generative AI capabilities to Meta's 3.6 billion users. By designing custom silicon, Meta seeks to optimize performance for its specific workloads while reducing the total cost of ownership compared to general-purpose hardware. In addition to the accelerators, Broadcom will provide optical connectivity and networking solutions to ensure low-latency performance across Meta's AI data centers. The agreement includes an initial capacity of one gigawatt (GW), serving as the first phase of a multi-year, multi-gigawatt rollout. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the partnership across chip design, packaging, and networking is essential to building the computing foundation required for personal superintelligence. This move represents a strategic diversification of Meta's supply chain, decreasing its reliance on dominant chip suppliers such as Nvidia (NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). For Broadcom, the deal solidifies its position as a critical partner for hyperscale cloud providers seeking bespoke AI hardware, potentially increasing its share of the broader AI market expansion.
