South Korean automaker Kia has announced plans to enter the competitive US pickup truck market by the end of the decade. CEO Ho Sung Song indicated the company aims to sell 90,000 pickups annually in North America, contributing to a total US sales target of over 1 million vehicles. The company intends to launch a midsize electric and range-extender truck to compete with established models from Ford, Toyota, and Chevrolet. While the US truck segment is historically lucrative, the transition to electric powertrains introduces significant margin pressures. Unlike internal combustion engine trucks, which offer high margins over sedans, electric pickups require substantially larger and more expensive batteries to handle towing and hauling, which erodes profitability.
