German Carriers Seek Emergency Fuel Reserves Amid Middle East Tensions

German airlines are calling for urgent government intervention to secure fuel supplies and reduce operational costs as escalating tensions in the Middle East threaten the upcoming peak summer travel season. The industry group BDL has warned that without emergency measures, carriers may be forced to implement flight cuts. Central to the industry's request is the release of strategic kerosene reserves to stabilize supply. Furthermore, BDL is advocating for access to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) pipeline system, which would help ensure a steady flow of fuel to Germany's primary aviation hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. Beyond logistics, the industry is seeking financial and regulatory relief. This includes a temporary reduction in carbon levies and increased flexibility regarding sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) requirements, which have added significant cost pressures to operators.
