World Project Unveils 'World 4.0' to Combat AI-Driven Impersonation

World, the digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most significant overhaul to date, transitioning World ID into a 'full-stack proof of human' system. Unveiled at an event in San Francisco, the upgrade is designed to address the escalating industry concerns regarding bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans across digital platforms. The system continues to rely on proprietary 'Orb' hardware, which scans a user's iris and face to generate a unique cryptographic code. According to the company, images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized fragments are distributed to ensure a user has not registered multiple times. This allows individuals to prove their humanity online without disclosing personal identity data, despite ongoing criticism regarding biometric scanning. World 4.0 introduces a redesigned architecture featuring account-based identity, multi-key support, and enhanced recovery mechanisms. To complement the protocol, the company is rolling out a dedicated World ID app in beta, intended to make human authentication as seamless as logging into a social media account. The rollout includes a wide array of enterprise and consumer integrations. World is partnering with Zoom to implement 'Deep Face' verification for meeting participants and with Docusign to incorporate human-proof checks into digital agreements. Other collaborations include Tinder for 'verified human' badges and a 'Concert Kit' designed to prevent ticket scalping by bots. For developers, the new 'AgentKit' allows the attachment of human credentials to AI agents, facilitating secure, agent-based commerce. This effort involves collaborations with Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase to establish a trust layer for automated workflows. The project's growth is reflected in its latest data, with quarterly transactions hitting 200.4 million in Q1 2026, more than double the lows seen in 2023.
