The High Cost of Leverage: Analyzing the Risks of TQQQ

The ProShares Ultra Pro QQQ (TQQQ) provides investors with a high-octane vehicle to track the Nasdaq-100, aiming to deliver three times the index's daily performance. While the potential for gains is magnified, the fund's structure introduces significant risks that can lead to rapid capital erosion during market downturns. Since its inception in February 2010, TQQQ has posted average annual returns of 39.3%. However, these figures mask the extreme volatility inherent in leveraged ETFs, which utilize borrowed capital to amplify daily movements. This mechanism means that while gains are tripled on positive days, losses are similarly magnified on negative days. The fund's history is marked by severe drawdowns that can be devastating for unseasoned investors. TQQQ saw a decline of approximately 69% by the end of December 2022, followed by an 18% drop in early January 2024 and a 26% decline in April 2025. In contrast, the non-leveraged Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) has delivered more stable average annual returns of 10.07% since its launch in March 1999. Because of the daily reset and the compounding effect of leverage, TQQQ is primarily suited for professional traders and day traders executing short-term speculative bets. For long-term retirement savers, the potential for catastrophic losses during a tech sector correction makes low-cost, non-leveraged index funds a more prudent choice for wealth preservation.
