Africa continues to struggle with fuel insecurity despite possessing some of the world's largest oil reserves. Many oil-producing nations across the continent are forced to export raw crude and subsequently import refined petroleum products at market prices. This structural inefficiency creates a dangerous dependency on global markets and foreign refining hubs. Recent geopolitical tensions, specifically conflicts involving Iran, have exacerbated these vulnerabilities. The resulting volatility in global energy prices has disproportionately impacted African economies that lack the buffers of strategic reserves or the ability to process their own resources.
