Eni and Repsol Secure Deal to Boost Venezuelan Gas Exports by 2031

Eni SpA and Repsol SA are set to revive a long-stalled energy initiative in Venezuela, targeting the commencement of natural gas exports by the end of 2031. The agreement, reached with interim President Delcy Rodríguez, focuses on the expansion of a massive offshore field located in the Gulf of Venezuela. The deal represents a strategic pivot for the European firms, allowing them to navigate the complex political landscape of Caracas to unlock significant untapped reserves. By securing this agreement, the companies aim to more than double current production levels at the offshore site. To facilitate the export process, the companies plan to employ a floating terminal. This infrastructure will allow the natural gas to be processed and exported as liquefied natural gas (LNG), bypassing some of the traditional pipeline constraints associated with the region. While the project has a long lead time, the move signals a potential thawing of relations and a renewed interest in Venezuelan energy assets. For Eni and Repsol, the project offers a long-term growth trajectory in a region with some of the world's largest gas reserves, though geopolitical risks remain a primary consideration for investors.
