Rivian Automotive's manufacturing facility in central Illinois suffered structural damage following a significant tornado outbreak over the weekend. The incident specifically impacted "Building 2," a facility dedicated to parts storage and logistics for the upcoming R2 electric vehicle. The R2 is viewed as a pivotal product for the company's growth strategy and is slated for release this spring. According to CEO RJ Scaringe, the tornado touched down directly on the plant, resulting in damage to the roof and at least one wall of the recently constructed building. The National Weather Service classified the event as an EF1 tornado with peak winds estimated at 100 mph. Despite the damage to the logistics area, Rivian reports that its primary assembly lines continue to operate as planned. Management expects operations within the affected area to resume later this week. No injuries were reported among the staff, and the company is currently completing assessments of the damage to ensure the safety and support of the Normal, Illinois team.
