Australian Fuel Prices Retreat as Government Interventions Offset Geopolitical Shocks

Australian motorists are seeing relief at the pump as national gasoline prices fell for the third consecutive week. This downward trend follows government interventions aimed at stabilizing energy costs amidst significant global volatility. The price correction comes after a period of sharp inflation triggered by the outbreak of war in Iran. While prices are currently retreating, the cost of fuel remains substantially higher than pre-conflict levels, indicating that the market has not yet fully returned to its previous equilibrium. According to data from the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average petrol price decreased by approximately 5% to A$2.129 (roughly $1.5279) per liter for the week ending Sunday. Diesel prices also saw a decline, dropping about 3% to A$3.089 per liter. Despite the recent weekly drops, petrol prices are still roughly 18% higher than they were at the start of March. The persistence of this premium suggests that while government measures are providing a necessary buffer for consumers, the underlying geopolitical risk continues to support a higher price floor for energy in the region.
