Long term

Ripple has detailed a four-phase plan to protect the XRP Ledger from future quantum computing threats. The initiative aims for full readiness by 2028 to prevent the potential compromise of private keys.

  • Full quantum-resistance targeted for 2028
  • Emergency 'hard shift' planned for high-risk accounts
  • NIST-standard defenses being tested in Phase 2
  • Collaboration with Project Eleven for technical benchmarking
  • Developer test network integration scheduled for late 2026

Ripple has announced a comprehensive four-phase strategy to ensure the XRP Ledger (XRPL) becomes quantum-proof by 2028. The move comes as the blockchain industry anticipates the arrival of quantum computers capable of breaking traditional cryptographic signatures, which could allow attackers to reverse-engineer private keys from public keys exposed on-chain. The initiative follows warnings from Google regarding the vulnerability of major blockchains, including Bitcoin, to quantum attacks. Some analysts have identified 2029 as 'Q-day,' the theoretical deadline for implementing defenses before quantum machines can effectively drain digital asset holdings. The roadmap begins with 'Q-Day readiness,' an emergency phase designed to protect long-held accounts via a 'hard shift' to quantum-safe accounts and the implementation of zero-knowledge proofs. This would allow holders to migrate funds securely even in a compromised scenario. Phase 2, slated for completion in the first half of 2026, involves a full vulnerability assessment and the testing of defenses suggested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). To accelerate this process, Ripple has partnered with quantum security firm Project Eleven for validator-level testing and custody wallet prototypes. Phase 3, targeted for the second half of 2026, will introduce quantum-resistant signatures to the developer test network. This allows developers to build and test against new cryptography without disrupting the live network. Ripple notes that the transition is both a technical and operational challenge, as it requires the eventual migration of all XRP holders and integrated applications to new security standards.
