Amazon Diversifies Freight Electrification with Einride Partnership

Amazon is scaling its efforts to decarbonize its transportation network by deploying 75 manually operated electric heavy-duty trucks from Einride. These vehicles will be integrated into Amazon Relay, the company's freight booking platform, to facilitate the movement of goods between fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. The partnership highlights Amazon's strategy of diversifying its electric vehicle providers to mitigate risk and accelerate adoption. The company has already established significant agreements with Rivian for 100,000 delivery vehicles by 2030, as well as orders for electric rigs from Mercedes-Benz in Europe and Volvo in the U.S. market. Beyond the hardware, the deployment includes the use of Einride's proprietary Saga AI software to optimize load execution and charging planning across five locations. The electric fleet is projected to cover up to three million transport miles annually with zero tailpipe emissions. This operational expansion coincides with Einride's push toward a public offering. The company intends to go public via a SPAC merger with Legato Merger Corp. III, a deal expected to raise more than $300 million. Strategic ties have further deepened with Amazon board member Keith B. Alexander joining Einride's board of directors. While the current rollout focuses on manual operation, Einride is positioning itself for the autonomous future. The company has secured NHTSA approval to operate autonomous vehicles in Texas and four other states, signaling a broader shift toward driverless freight operations in the U.S.
