Trump Signals Potential DoD Deal with AI Firm Anthropic

President Donald Trump has indicated that a deal allowing Anthropic's artificial intelligence models to be utilized by the Department of Defense is "possible," following a series of high-level meetings at the White House. The President described the company's leadership as "very smart" and suggested their technology could be of great use to the military. This potential agreement follows a period of intense friction between the AI startup and the federal government. In March, the DoD had designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, citing national security concerns. This label effectively barred defense contractors from using Claude AI models in military work and was accompanied by a presidential directive for federal agencies to cease all use of the company's technology. The thaw in relations appears linked to the introduction of Anthropic's new "Mythos" model, which features advanced cybersecurity capabilities. CEO Dario Amodei recently met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as well as Vice President JD Vance, to discuss AI cyber readiness. Historical friction between the two parties has been rooted in ethical and operational boundaries. While a $200 million contract was signed in July, negotiations for deployment on the GenAI.mil platform collapsed in September. The DoD sought unfettered access to the models, while Anthropic demanded assurances that its technology would not be used for domestic mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. A formal resolution would reintegrate one of the world's leading AI labs into the U.S. defense infrastructure, potentially shifting the competitive landscape for government AI contracts and removing legal hurdles currently facing the company.
