President Donald Trump has suggested that the federal government could intervene to prevent the liquidation of Spirit Airlines. Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Trump expressed openness to mergers and noted that the government might provide a lifeline to the struggling discount carrier, stating he would welcome a buyer for the company. Spirit is currently navigating a precarious financial position, having filed for bankruptcy protection twice in less than a year. While the airline had planned to emerge from bankruptcy by mid-2026 through aircraft sales and a narrowed operational focus, external macroeconomic shocks have complicated the recovery process. The primary driver of the current distress is a sharp increase in jet fuel prices following military actions against Iran in February. According to Argus data, fuel prices have surged approximately 55% since February 28, reaching an average of $3.87 per gallon across major hubs including New York, Houston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is scheduled to meet with several low-cost carriers to discuss the economic burden of these fuel costs, with industry representatives expected to seek tax relief.
