DoorDash Integrates Stablecoin Payouts via Stripe’s Tempo Blockchain

DoorDash is transitioning portions of its payment infrastructure to stablecoin rails through Tempo, a specialized blockchain developed by Stripe and venture firm Paradigm. The move marks a significant step in integrating blockchain technology into mainstream commercial financial flows. DoorDash, which facilitated nearly $75 billion in merchant sales last year, will initially utilize Tempo for cross-border payouts. By bypassing traditional banking rails, the company aims to leverage the sub-second settlement and fixed-fee structure of the Tempo chain to improve efficiency for its global merchant network across more than 40 countries. Stripe is positioning Tempo as a foundational layer for its money movement suite, enabling businesses to manage stablecoins alongside fiat currencies. This strategy follows Stripe's $1.1 billion acquisition of Bridge in 2024 and its purchase of Privy, signaling a broader ambition to modernize global payment infrastructure and make transactions borderless. The adoption by DoorDash, alongside other infrastructure partners such as Visa, Mastercard, UBS, and Klarna, suggests a shift toward 'payment-specific' blockchains. Unlike general-purpose chains, Tempo is designed for enterprise workloads, offering private transaction channels and predictable costs to avoid the congestion and volatility typical of public networks.
