Michael and Susan Dell Commit $750 Million to AI-Driven Medical Campus at UT Austin

Michael and Susan Dell have pledged $750 million to the University of Texas at Austin to establish a state-of-the-art medical center and research campus. The facility is intended to leverage advanced computing and artificial intelligence to improve diagnostic precision and patient outcomes, allowing for better coordination of care from the outset. The project represents a significant expansion of healthcare infrastructure in Austin, a city that has seen its metro population grow to approximately 2.6 million people as of 2024. The new campus will include a hospital, a research facility, and a cancer center that is already under development. Groundbreaking is expected later this year, with a target opening date of 2030. Beyond the physical infrastructure, the donation will support student scholarships and the university's supercomputing center. This latest gift brings the couple's total contributions to UT Austin to over $1 billion, including an initial $50 million gift in 2013. Michael Dell emphasized that building a new facility from the ground up allows for the seamless integration of data and AI, rather than retrofitting legacy systems. While acknowledging concerns regarding data privacy and algorithmic bias, Dell stated that AI should serve as a tool to augment human judgment rather than replace it, provided that strict security and privacy standards are maintained.
