Gotti Heir Sentenced to Prison for $1.1 Million Pandemic Fraud Scheme

Carmine Agnello, the grandson of former Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for defrauding the U.S. government of $1.1 million in pandemic-era relief funds. According to the U.S. Attorney's Eastern District of New York, Agnello fraudulently obtained multiple disaster relief loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA). While the loans were intended to support his auto parts and recycling business in Queens, including the payment of employee salaries, the funds were instead diverted for personal use. Federal prosecutors revealed that Agnello invested approximately $420,000 of the misappropriated money into a cryptocurrency business. The fraudulent activity took place between April 2020 and November 2021. As part of the sentencing, Agnello is required to repay the stolen taxpayer funds. He is scheduled to report for imprisonment on July 1. This case highlights a broader trend of pandemic-related financial crime. Data from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) indicates that fraud against Covid-related relief funds was widespread, with an estimated $135 billion—or up to 15% of total funds—lost to various scams. Other similar cases have seen individuals misappropriating millions of dollars for luxury purchases and digital assets, underscoring the vulnerabilities within the government's rapid-disbursement relief programs during the crisis.
