Iranian Crude Tankers Bypass US Naval Blockade

At least two Iranian-flagged very-large crude carriers (VLCCs) have successfully bypassed a US-led naval blockade in the Persian Gulf, transporting significant volumes of crude oil to global markets. The vessels, identified as the Hero II and Hedy, were tracked via satellite imagery as they moved past the blockade line and entered the Arabian Sea on April 20. This movement is part of a larger coordinated effort by a flotilla of ships to evade US restrictions. According to data from intelligence firm Vortexa, the Hero II and Hedy alone have a combined capacity of up to 4 million barrels of oil. In total, the flotilla is estimated to have ferried approximately 9 million barrels of crude past the blockade line. The ability of Iranian tankers to 'go dark' and successfully navigate around military blockades increases geopolitical uncertainty in one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints. This development suggests a persistent gap in the enforcement of energy sanctions despite the presence of US warships. Market participants are likely to view this as a signal of heightened tension in the region.
