A growing number of Gen Z students are turning to TikTok to navigate the rising costs of higher education, but experts warn that this trend exposes them to significant financial risk. According to a survey by private lender Sallie, approximately 20% of Gen Z students use the platform weekly to search for scholarships, with one-third reporting encounters with misleading content. The urgency for funding is driven by escalating tuition and living expenses. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the average cost for a private nonprofit college has risen to $60,920, up from $58,500 the previous year. Similarly, in-state public four-year institutions now average $25,850. These increases coincide with more restrictive federal student loan rules and limited debt forgiveness options. While over $6 billion in scholarships are awarded annually, the prevalence of influencers promising guaranteed awards in exchange for payment has created a dangerous environment. Advocates highlight several red flags, including requests for sensitive personal data early in the application process, vague contact information, and artificial urgency regarding deadlines. To avoid fraud, experts suggest using the U.S. Department of Labor's free search tool, the College Board's Big Future, or Fastweb. Additionally, students are encouraged to review the official financial aid pages of the universities to which they are applying to find verified resources. Despite the allure of social media promises, the likelihood of securing a substantial outside scholarship remains low. Data indicates only about 1 in 8 students successfully win a scholarship, with the average award totaling approximately $5,000.
