USA Rare Earth has agreed to acquire Brazil's Serra Verde Group to secure a critical supply of magnetic rare earth elements. The strategic move, paired with a price target increase from Canaccord, triggered a double-digit surge in the company's share price.

  • Acquisition of Serra Verde Group valued at $2.8 billion
  • Secures access to Pela Ema mine and processing plant in Brazil
  • Provides critical HREEs including Dysprosium and Terbium
  • Canaccord raises price target to $32
  • Targets >50% of non-China HREE supply by 2027
  • Supports production goals for Stillwater and Round Top facilities

USA Rare Earth (NASDAQ: USAR) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Serra Verde Group in Brazil for approximately $2.8 billion. The acquisition is designed to solidify the company's position in the domestic rare earth magnet market by securing essential raw materials and reducing reliance on Asian supply chains. The deal centers on the Pela Ema mine and processing plant located in Goiás, Brazil. According to CEO Barbara Humpton, this facility represents the only producer outside of Asia capable of supplying all four magnetic rare earth elements at scale, including critical heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) such as Dysprosium and Terbium. By integrating Serra Verde, USA Rare Earth aims to de-risk its operational roadmap. The company intends to scale production of rare-earth magnets at its Stillwater facility using these secured supplies as a bridge before commencing commercial production at its heavy rare-earth rich Round Top deposit in Texas, which is scheduled for 2028. The announcement coincided with a bullish update from Canaccord, which reiterated its 'Buy' rating and raised its price target for USAR from $29 to $32. Following these developments, shares of USA Rare Earth climbed more than 10% in midday trading. From a geopolitical perspective, the acquisition is highly significant. USA Rare Earth noted that Serra Verde production is projected to account for over 50% of the total non-China HREE supply by 2027, positioning the company as a primary alternative for critical minerals essential to high-tech and defense applications.
